The AI Rubber Band

Reflect on personal motivations and blockers in adopting AI.

When to Use This Activity

Use this activity to understand participants' motivations and blockers in the context of AI adoption. Use it at the start of a workshop to set the stage for the training or workshop or at the end to reflect on the session's learnings.

This activity is inspired by Rachel Davis's Rubber Band Reflection, a session design that she shared on LinkedIn. Thank you Rachel!

Key Learning Outcomes

  • Identify personal and collective motivations and blockers related to AI
  • Foster open discussion and reflection on AI adoption
  • Develop strategies to overcome blockers and enhance motivations for using AI

Cards

You will need the following emoji cards from the 1€ Starter Kit for each table, they will be used to visualize both extremes of the rubber band!

Other Materials

  • Markers
  • Sticky notes

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Setup

Ask participants to use the emoji cards to represent their extremes on the rubber band.

😡 "What is holding you back from using AI?" (the AI Blockers)

🤩 "What is pulling you forward towards AI?" (the AI Motivators)

2. Individual Reflection

  • Give participants time to reflect on each question.
  • Ask them to write at least one AI Blocker and one AI Motivator with sticky notes and place them in between the 2 emoji cards.

3. Group Discussion

  • Facilitate a discussion around the AI blockers and motivators.
  • Elaborate on the debrief to introduce what they will learn in the workshop.
  • Document by taking photos of the tables with the blockers and motivators.

Facilitation Tips

Make sure the space is safe enough for sharing personal experiences with AI.

Variants

For Virtual Sessions

  • Use tools like Miro or MURAL for the virtual whiteboard.
  • If you have a large group, use breakout rooms for more intimate group discussions.

For small groups

  • Use UHU Patafix to stick the 2 emoji cards on the wall.
  • Ask participants to stick their blockers and motivators in between the 2 emoji cards.
That's a one of the case where you would want to print them big!

For Large Groups

  • Split participants into table teams for the reflection and discussion phases.
  • Have each group share key insights in Stormz with the larger group.
  • Use the Stormz insight cloud to visualize and debrief the insights.

As a Closing Activity

  • Use the same activity to close the workshop.
  • Ask participants to reflect on what they learned and what they will take away from the workshop.
  • If you also used it as an opening activity, ask them to compare their initial motivations and blockers with their final thoughts.

What's Next

After this activity, participants can:

  • The Task Mapping would be a perfect follow-up to this activity.
  • Eventually, you could design activities that address specific AI blockers identified during the reflection.
